The car-free resort Zermatt is located at an altitude of 1'620 m
above sea-level in the south-west of Switzerland. This idyllic
village in the Matter Valley in the canton of the Valais nestles
amongst fabulous scenery of mountains and glaciers and offers
visitors a fantastic panorama of 38 four-thousand-metre peaks.
ZERMATT SKI RESORTS
Zermatt, with its wind-protected southern location, embraces
three skiing areas which enjoy superb snow conditions and the
longest skiing season in the Alps. The 313 km of ski runs include
slopes ranging from the simplest to the most challenging. Easy
access is provided by an extensive network of 74 transport
facilities, with high-capacity cableways, mountain railways and
ski-lifts (incl. Cervinia, Italy) capable of conveying up to 75700
passengers an hour.
This idyllic mountain village at the foot of the Matterhorn has
developed into one of the biggest summer and winter resorts.
There are no motorised vehicles in Zermatt. Besides
electrically-powered cars and bicycles, the only form of transport
allowed is horse-drawn sleighs and carriages.

km of varied pistes amidst unique scenery in the international ski
area between Switzerland and Italy. Snow and fun parks,
sledding runs, walking tours with snowshoes, dog-sled rides
and 45 km of prepared winter hiking paths also offer a welcome
alternative to skiing.

ZERMATT CHALETS
If you are looking for an individual chalet, this too is on offer in
Zermatt. The chalets offer the opportunity for friends or family to
rent a whole private chalet on a weekly basis, presenting another
choice of accommodation for your Zermatt stay. The standards of
comfort are varied and can be assessed by a category of stars,
as for the hotels and apartments. Some of the chalets can be
serviced and catered on request.
ZERMATT HOTELS
Zermatt offers 116 hotels of all standards with a total of 6800
beds. Guests can choose whether they prefer a hotel with half
board or a bed and breakfast hotel or perhaps an aparthotel.
ZERMATT ACTIVITIES-SUMMER
Hiking, mountain biking, climbing, high-altitude tours and
summer skiing are popular attractions in summer and also in the
colourful autumn season. More than 1'000 different species of
plants adorn the mountain meadows above Zermatt. Six drag lifts
and a cable-car serve the highest summer ski area in the Alps
from the beginning of July until the end of October. And a visit to
the ski area isn't complete without a visit to the "hall of ice"... The
natural Glacier Palace beneath the top station at the Matterhorn
glacier paradise (3'810 m above sea-level) gives visitors an
insight in to the fascinating world of snow and ice.
GETTING TO ZERMATT
Zermatt is easily accessible from the west, north and south: the
Lake Geneva, Lötschberg and Simplon lines provide direct
connections to the modern narrow-gauge Zermatt Railway, which
reaches Zermatt from Brig or Visp after a 90-minute journey
through the rugged Vispa Valley.
There is a good road as far as Täsch (5 km from Zermatt), where
there are open and covered car parks available. Shuttle trains
and minibus taxis operate from Täsch.
GETTING AROUND ZERMATT
"Electro" buses
Zermatt has two routes with electrically-powered buses which
serve all major intersections. In winter the bus service is included
in the ski-pass.
ZERMATT SHOPPING
The shops of Zermatt offer a wide variety of goods, the tourist can
buy everything from souvenirs, or fashionable ski clothes, to
expensive jewellery. Polite shop assistants with a knowledge of
