STINGRAY CITY ANTIGUA
We visited Stingray City Antigua while on a shore excursion booked through
Royal Caribbean. I'm normally a fan of independent tours but couldn't find a way
to visit Stingray City Antigua without booking a cruise line sponsored excursion.
We really enjoyed ourselves though and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Before going, I was a little concerned because I'd read the stingrays were kept in
a fenced enclosure almost like a pen. In reality, the enclosure is much larger
than expected, giving the stingrays plenty of room to swim around and escape
from the crowds. There were also several places where the stingrays could swim
out of the enclosure if they wanted to.

Once you arrive at
Stingray City Antigua, you're given a brief talk about safety,
then are handed life jackets and snorkel gear. It's only a short five minute boat
ride to the floating dock where the boats will park while you play with the
stingrays. A few people didn't like being with the stingrays at all and quickly
climbed back out to sit in the boat but most of us had a great time. The water
was about shoulder deep on most adults.

The guides will show you how to gently hold a stingray for a photo opportunity or
feed them. Though my teenage daughter swam with stingrays once before in
Grand Cayman she couldn't quite get over the feeling of their velvety bodies
touching her legs as they swam around us. After everyone had a chance to
spend as much time with the stingrays as they wanted, we loaded back into the
boats and headed back to shore for free rum punch.

Stingray City Antigua is also a small zoo with monkeys and many varieties of
parrots to visit with as you enjoy the rum punch.
