SAN DIEGO WILD ANIMAL PARK
What makes the San Diego Wild Animal Park so unique
are the large field exhibits which enable the animals to
roam freely. The Wgasa Bush Line Railway, a 60-minute
electric monorail ride, allows visitors to observe the
animals in their natural habitat.
Herds of elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and antelope are
among the hundreds of animals you can see roaming the
scenic rolling landscape of East and North Africa, the
Asian Plains, a Eurasian Waterhole, South Africa, and
the Mongolian Steppe.
You’ll find wandering groups of Indian rhinos, several
Asian deer species such as axis deer and wapiti, and
large antelope species grazing in their established
territories in the 60-acre (24-hectare) Asian Plains
exhibit. The animals here are varied and may come from
quite different parts of Asia, yet each group has found its
niche.
In East Africa you will catch sight of a herd of southern
white rhinos, groups of agile and fleet gazelles, fierce
Cape buffalo, and towering Uganda giraffes. You’ll also
discover several water-loving antelope, the long-faced
white-bearded gnu, and the striking East African crowned
crane, with its stately plumage and fancy golden
headdress.
Soon you find yourself in the territory of North Africa, a
30-acre (12-hectare) exhibit home to such diverse
species as Barbary red deer, ankole cattle, and sand
gazelles. The northern part of Africa is largely covered
with desert, and the species found in this range are
specially adapted to survive those harsh and challenging
conditions.
The 90-acre (36-hectare) South Africa exhibit provides
views of reticulated giraffes, sable antelope, blesboks,
and waterbucks, and the highly endangered northern
white rhino. There is a striking variety of birds here,
including attention-getting secretary birds, wattled
cranes, white-backed vultures, Dalmatian pelicans, and
South African ostriches.
In the easternmost corner of the Wild Animal Park is the
35-acre (14-hectare) Asian Waterhole exhibit, a boulder-
strewn, grassy refuge for shy species that require a
certain measure of privacy. Many of these are exotic
species of deer, impressive bovid species like the Javan
banteng, and the Turkomen markhor, a goat species with
spectacular horns.
The Mongolian Steppe exhibit is home to a herd of
endangered Przewalski’s horses, the last species of wild
horse left in the world. Information exchange and
breeding loans between Russia, China, the United
States, and Europe have brought reintroduced herds to
reserves in China and Mongolia, with additional
reintroduction projects now taking place.
ZOOWERKS-THE RIDE
DINO ISLAND II 3D: ESCAPE FROM DINO ISLAND
From the very beginning, you are catapulted right into

lava begins to flow, cliffs break away, and Tony perilously
falls into a deep and fast whirlpool. Will you be able to
save Tony (and yourselves) from extinction? The thrilling
and educational simulator ride is available from 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m. daily. ZooWerks can be found next to the Park's
Petting Kraal. Price for members is $5.50 for adults (12
