SAN DIEGO ATTRACTIONS
Take a Trip to San Diego
By Caitlin Moore
San Diego is one of those places that is perfect for
vacations. The weather is always nice, the city is filled with
diverse activities and cultural offerings, and beaches,
mountains, and deserts encircle it all. Everywhere you look
you’ll find something fantastic to see, hear, taste, or do, so if
you have yet to visit California’s Southern end, get ready for
a good time.
The natural features alone surrounding this mecca of
vacationing opportunities are enough to fill a few days.
Coronado Beach has been named one of the best in
America, and it truly offers something for everyone.
Swimmers, sand castle builders, and sunbathers will delight
in the accessible conditions of the area known as Central
Beach. Dogs and their owners can frolic in the leash-free
zones, and body boarders can catch a few waves down on
the south end. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, and
if you’d like to make this your base, vacation home rentals
are available. If this stretch of San Diego is good enough for
the President and his family (many former commanders-in-
chief have stayed in this area), it should be good enough for
you and yours.
Spice things up by adding some hiking and biking to your
schedule. Miles of winding, peaceful trails will take you
anywhere you want to go from the ocean to the peak of
Mount Soledad. A coastal bike tour will acquaint you with
some of San Diego’s loveliest neighborhoods, and a break
at La Jolla cove will allow you to spend some quality time with
a few seals and sea lions. Mission Bay offers flat trails, which
are perfect for family excursions, and hikers up for more of a
challenge can make their way to the top of Cowles Mountain,
where they’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Mexico
and the Lagunas.
Kayaking is a popular way to see things from a different
perspective, and tours are tailored to your specific interests.
Explore the Sea Caves, watch for whales, or take a
moonlight ride that will give you a one-of-a-kind vantage
point for the fireworks held every summer Friday and
Saturday night at Sea World. Dogs can even join the fun, as
“pooch paddles” are often available.
In case you haven’t noticed, San Diego is quite creature-
friendly. Dog parks, beaches, and activities can be found
throughout the city, and believe it or not, dog boutiques and
bakery shops are there to cater to your canine friend’s every
need. Pet lovers will find themselves surrounded by kindred
spirits in this town, so be sure to bring your best furry friend
along with you on vacation. Many rental properties welcome
dogs, so don’t worry about finding a place to stay that will
accommodate all members of the family.
World-class attractions constitute another reason that San
Diego stands apart as an ideal getaway spot. The San
Diego Zoo is considered one of the best around, and is
open 365 days a year. Catch a glimpse of over 800 species
of animals, including rare ones like koalas and giant pandas,
and 6,500 species of plants. Sea World offers an amazing
array of marine life, and of course, Shamu. Watch the
friendliest of whales live up to his reputation as a true
showman during his ever popular performance extravaganza.
And finally, if you need a bit more playtime while you’re here,
head to Legoland. Over 50 rides, shows, and activities will
keep you busy as you find yourself assuming the roles of
firefighter, racecar driver, and dragon slayer. Children and
the adults who are lucky enough to be along for the ride will
delight in all that San Diego’s impressive diversions have to
offer.
Shopping, dining, and exploring the city’s nightlife also tempt
many a visitor. Horton Plaza, an open-air mall located
downtown, is a smart choice for newcomers due to its huge
collection of unique shops and distinctive architecture. Pick
up a souvenir here, or simply grab a bite to eat while
soaking in the local culture. The artsy Gaslamp Quarter also
makes for an exciting stop, as its array of restaurants, clubs,
and art galleries attracts the most colorful people around.
San Diego is clearly a place brimming with options when it
comes to entertaining you and your traveling companions. It
is also quite welcoming in terms of finding great vacation
accommodations, so be sure to examine a number of
possibilities before settling on the perfect place to unpack
your bags. Vacation rentals, which can be chosen based on
size, special amenities, and location, can often give your trip
an extra special quality. A stunning view, a yard for the dog,
or simply knowing that you won’t have to lug your hairdryer
along or eat at a restaurant for every meal make deciding to
stay in a condo or cottage a no-brainer.
