OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA
Come to the Outer Banks of North Carolina - a place of warm ocean
breezes, spectacular sunrises and wide pristine beaches. From the
Virginia border south for 100 miles to Ocracoke, this area is a chain
of unique islands. The Outer Banks has a population of 50,000 and
hosts more than 7 million visitors each year. These sandy barrier
islands with so much unspoiled natural beauty are a special place
where time seems a bit slower and visitors are lured back year after
year.

These barrier islands offer many recreational opportunities.  Visit the
historic lighthouses, stroll the beaches, windsurf, or just relax while

Ocracoke Island once served as the
stomping grounds of eighteenth-century pirate Blackbeard. You will
also find many historic attractions such as 16th century history of our
first settlers celebrated on Roanoke Island and the site of man’s first
powered airplane flight at Kill Devil Hills.

The Lost Colony - Located at Waterside Theatre on beautiful
Roanoke Island - Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. One hundred
and seventeen men, women and children establish the first English
settlement in the new world on Roanoke Island in 1587-then
mysteriously disappear. This is America’s longest-running outdoor
drama.

Roanoke Island Festival Park & History Center - The history of the
Outer Banks comes to life at Roanoke Island Festival Park located
across from the Manteo waterfront. The new exhibit hall features
exhibits on the Lost Colony, Native Americans of the Outer Banks,
and so much more.

Golfing - In past years, the Outer Banks was known for its Snapper,
Sea Bass and Grouper, not its eagles, birdies and pars. Today golf
has become a very popular sport of the Outer Banks.

Jockey's Ridge State Park – This 414-acre park is home to the
largest sand dune on the East Coast which is about 140 feet high.
The trek to the top of the highest dune allows a spectacular view of
both Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, as well as the Roanoke Sound
and the Atlantic Ocean.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse- - Located at the southern tip of Hatteras,
this is the most  photographed, painted, read about and admired
lighthouse in NorthAmerica. Climb the 268 steps and view the
beautiful view of the island and beaches.

Wright Brothers National Memorial - Site of the first powered airplane
flight- December 17, 1903. Visitor Center with full-scale replica of
original plane.

Roanoke Island - Birthplace of English America - More than 400
years ago, the first permanent European settlers to the "New World"
arrived at Roanoke. On Roanoke Island one can stand on the very
spot where those pioneers stood centuries ago at Fort Raleigh
National Historic Site

Elizabethan Gardens - A showplace all four seasons of the year,
these gardens were created by the Garden Club of North Carolina in
1951 as a living memorial to the English Colonists.

The Elizabeth II - Docked at Roanoke Island Festival Park, this full-
size reproduction of a 16th century sailing ship was named for one
of the seven vessels that sailed from England to the New World in
1584.

The Currituck Beach Lighthouse - Built by the Lighthouse
Establishment in 1874 - the same year the famous Life Saving
Service began building stations every six miles down the coast from
the Virginia state line. Its imported Fresnel lens and whale-oil lamp
reached ships as far as 25 miles offshore.

Corolla Outback Adventures - Specializing in guided ATV tours to the
pristine North Beach and wild horse safaris. Also offers tideline
charters and kayakingexcursions.

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge  - Features over 150,000
acres of wetland habitats and a wide variety of wildlife species
ranging from wood ducks and alligators to black bears and red
wolves.  This national wildlife refuge also features numerous plant
species.
