Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort
Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort is located in the awe-inspiring
area of the Sierra Nevada range. It is one of the world's top
resorts and offers up to 10 months of skiing per year. Mammoth
Lakes receives an average of more than 350" of snow each
year. It is almost as large as Aspen, but it is more difficult to find.
Visitors must fly into Mammoth Lakes Airport from surrounding
areas in California. Mammoth is 325 miles north of Los Angeles
and about 160 miles east of Reno. The town of Mammoth
Lakes is only five miles from the base of Mammoth Mountain
and forty miles from the eastern entrance of Yosemite National
Park.
The town is in the middle of a massive facelift. The Village at
Mammoth has just opened and there is a lot of activity around
the shops and restaurants. With the 1996 partnership of the
Intrawest Corporation with Mammoth Mountain Ski area came
the three new village areas - The Village at Mammoth, Sierra
Star, and Juniper Springs. These will bring many new
developments to the resort.
Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort opens early in the season and
some years doesn't close until the Fourth of July. Mammoth has
added snowmaking to the top of its highest peak (more than
11,000 feet) and down the Cornice Run.
Mammoth is just what its name implies. It is large! Mammoth
Mountain has an average of 300 days of sunshine a year here.
The population of Mammoth is 7,000 year-round but 35,000
during peak-season weekend. There are
considerable distances between the restaurants, bars, and
slopes. The local shuttle service is good, however, and makes
stops along the five miles from town to the mountain base.
Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort offers world-class downhill
skiing. The terrain is equally balanced for beginners,
intermediates, and experts, so it is popular with families and all
levels of skiing ability. There are 3,500 acres to play on, a
vertical drop of 3,100 feet, access to lift skiing at 11,053 feet,
156 trails and 27 lifts. The lifts give riders a view of the Inyo
National Forest, lake and mountains. Heli-skiing and snowcat
skiing are also available. Snowmobile rentals and dogsled
rides are close by. Other recreation includes snowboarding,
snowshoeing, ice-skating, dog sled rides, cross-country skiing,
lift serviced sledding, and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
