KAUAI HAWAII
Kauai is the fourth largest of the main Hawaiian islands and has been the
film location site for more than 60 major motion picture and television
films including "South Pacific" and "Blue Hawaii" with Elvis Presley, and
more recently "Jurassic Park I, II, and III," "Six Days/Seven Nights" and
"Dragonfly". The island of Kauai is what most people expect to see when
they come to Hawaii-lush rainforests, flowers, singing birds, waterfalls
and stretches of white sand and blue water.
Only 3% of the land has been developed for commercial and residential
use, leaving the remaining land divided between agriculture and
conservation. You won't see any high-rise hotels in Kauai, because no
structure can be built more than four stories high, approximately the
height of a mature coconut palm tree.
HELPFUL HINTS
It rains a great deal in Kauai, in some places up to 600 inches a year. Mt.
Waialeale at the very center of Kauai is considered to be the wettest place
on Earth. If you're looking for sunshine head toward Poipu Beach, on the
south side of the island.
HIGHLIGHTS OF KAUAI
POIPU BEACH
Poipu Beach Resort, located 30-minutes south of Lihue is known as the
sunny side of Kauai. Some of the best snorkeling on the island can be
found a few feet off shore.
SPOUTING HORN
The natural wonder of Spouting Horn near Poipu Beach occurs when
water flowing under a lava shelf bursts through a small opening at the
surface, sending a spray of water 50 feet into the air.
WAILUA RIVER AND FERN GROTTO
Most cruise ships offer shore excursions up the Wailua River to see its
most magical attraction-the Fern Grotto. This picturesque cave hidden
behind cascading ferns is a popular spot for weddings.
WAILUA FALLS
If you're looking for a magnificent waterfall to view without a long hike-this
it it. You may recognize the 80-foot Wailua Falls, it was featured in the
opening scene of the popular television show, Fantasy Island.
WAIMEA CANYON
Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific, measuring 10 miles
long, 1 mile wide, and more than 3,500-feet deep. It was carved
thousands of years ago by rivers and floods that flowed from Mount
Waialeale's summit.
There are no gas stations along the 40-mile Waimea Canyon Road so be
sure to fill up before starting this trip. The main park area provides
restrooms. The elevation makes the air 10-15 degrees cooler than in the
valley and by afternoon many areas are often shrouded in clouds.
FOR CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS:
THE DOCK
Cruise ships dock at Nawiliwili, which is located a few minutes from the
airport and the main town of Lihue. The harbor and nearby Niumalu
Beach Park were pictured in the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. Niumalu
Beach is located to the west of the harbor. Kalapaki Beach is located to
the east, in front of the Kauai Marriott.
