REVIEW OF VILLAS BY LINDA SMITH
A TYPICAL DAY AT A LUXURY JAMAICA VILLA
DAWN
6:30 AM-7:00AM- The staff arrives and quietly opens up the house. The cook places a steaming pot of Blue
Mountain coffee on the veranda. If you happen to wake up before the staff arrives and want coffee, simply plug in the
coffee pot. The cook will prepare the coffee maker the night before.
Breakfast is served whenever you wish, usually on the outdoor
veranda. If you have special requests, let the cook know.
SAMPLE BREAKFAST AT FAIRWINDSAT TRYALL

bacon, toast with guava jelly, Lorna's Family Recipe Banana
Bread.
Day 2-Fresh fruit, bacon, blueberry muffins, toast and jelly.
Day 3-Fresh fruit, bacon, pancakes, toast and guava jelly.
Day 4-Fresh fruit, a Jamaican breakfast dish of ackee and

MORNING ACTIVITIES:
After breakfast, guests generally head off to play golf, tennis or sightsee. If you’re visiting Jamaica in the late spring
or summer months, I encourage you to plan physical activities in the cool morning hours. On our visit in late June,
the heat index reached 110 every day by 2:00 pm due to the high humidity.
LUNCH: SERVED WHENEVER YOU WISH
The cook will prepare either a light or hearty lunch depending
on your preferences. In our case, after eating a large breakfast
we were happy with salad and sandwiches.
SAMPLE LITE LUNCH MENU AT FAIRWINDS
Fresh fruit
Mixed Green Salad with fresh vegetables and meat,
such as smoked chicken, tuna salad
or homemade chicken salad.
A variety of sandwiches; grilled cheese, smoked turkey,
tuna salad or chicken salad
SAMPLE HEARTY LUNCH
Hamburgers, hot dogs, or Jamaican beef/vegetable patties.
A AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES
DINNER: SERVED WHENEVER YOU WISH
Whatever you do, don’t miss dinner. This is when the cook really shows off their culinary expertise. If you have food
allergies or preferences, let them know before they do the grocery shopping. Otherwise, it’s best to let them plan
the menus so they can cook their specialty dishes.
SAMPLE DINNER MENU AT FAIRWINDS AT TRYALL CLUB
Day 1: Barbecued pork,
rice and black beans, mixed green salad,
fresh green beans and carrots, chocolate cake.
Day 2: Beef hot pot over noodles, corn on the cob,
Lorna’s Banana Cake Family Recipe.
(Hot pot is made from local beef slow-cooked until deliciously
tender.)
Day 3: Lorna’s Caribbean style red snapper, mashed potatoes,
fresh green beans and chou chou (a Jamaican vegetable
similar to squash), Lorna’s Classic Cheese Cake.
Day 4: Jerk Chicken grilled over charcoal (a must try recipe!), white rice with scallions and special seasonings,
steamed mixed vegetable dish of broccoli, chou chou, beans and carrots, Lemon Meringue Pie.
Day 5: Jamaica style shrimp, lobster and red snapper (don’t miss this dish!), rice and black beans, Lemon
Coconut Cake.
AFTER DINNER DRINKS AND COFFEE ON THE VERANDA
The cook and housekeeper will stay until dinner
is over and everything is cleaned up and put away.
THE FOOD BUDGET
Please note that the food budget estimates on the
Villas by Linda Smith website are accurate though
they might appear to be high for groceries. Budget $30 per
adult per day for food, $20 for children under 14. This amount is
much cheaper than what you would pay to eat out in Jamaica and
the food is better. Certain foods are very expensive in Jamaica as
compared to the prices in the U.S., especially meats, seafood and
U.S. brand items.
On my recent trip to Jamaica, I visited the grocery store in Montego Bay to accurately report the grocery cost. The
most expensive items are steaks (they’re all imported), shrimp, lobster and fresh fish. Fresh fish (delivered to the
villa by the fish man) runs about $7-$8 per pound for a whole fish. A 12-lb fish such as red snapper will feed about
6 people. U.S. brand names are also very expensive compared to U.S. prices. For example, a box of Kellogg’s Corn
Flakes costs $7-$8 dollars whereas a generic brand cereal runs closer to $4. Soft drinks and junk food like potato
chips are much more expensive than in the United States. If you give the cook a shopping list with a lot of American
food, be prepared for sticker shock. Menu choices and alcohol consumption will affect this budget considerably. I
encourage you to try as many of the locally grown fruits and vegetables as you can. The flavor is so much better
than what we’re able to buy at a local grocery store in the U.S., particularly the papaya, mangoes and pineapples.
Typically, guests give the cook cash at the beginning of the week to use for grocery shopping and the fifty dollar taxi
ride into town. At the end of the week, the cook will return the change to you along with receipts.
