ICY STRAIT POINT ALASKA CRUISE PORT

On a recent Alaska Cruise on Royal Caribbean's Radiance of the Seas we fell
in love with the tiny village of Icy Strait Point. Compared to the other
commercialized Alaska cruise ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, Icy Strait
Point was the only port which represented the true feeling of Alaska heritage
we'd been hoping to see. Icy Strait Point is located near Alaska's largest Tlinglit
village of Hoonah.

F.I.S.H.E.S. WHALE WATCH TOUR-ICY STRAIT POINT
The highlight of our day at Icy Strait Point was the whale watch tour to Point
Adolphus with F.I.S.H.E.S. owned by Floyd and Marjorie Peterson. On a 3-hour
tour we saw many humpback whales, sea lions, eagles and even bears
wandering along the coastline. At Point Adolphus there are so many whales that
sightings are not a problem. Unlike our whale watch tour at Juneau we didn't
need to spend much of the time chasing or looking for whales because they
were everywhere.

Playful sea lions followed our boat and several times we saw whales, sea lions
and eagles feeding in the exact same spot. The whales would chase the fish to
the surface where the waiting sea lions and eagles would quickly grab them.
This tour is a photographer's dream because there were so many opportunities
to photograph the wildlife sometimes all three in the same shot (if you're quick!).

ICY STRAIT POINT SHOPPING
The Icy Strait Point Cannery Shops offer a good selection of locally made crafts
and gifts. All of the shops are Alaskan or locally owned and operated. Make sure
to visit the bookstore run by the Hoonah High School where all profits go back to
the school.

ICY STRAIT POINT CANNERY
A must see is the Cannery where now instead of salmon you can watch stuffed
animals being "canned." This is a great gift idea because you can choose your
animal and watch as it goes down the cannery factory line.

ICY STRAIT POINT ZIP LINE
The Icy Strait Point zip line is the longest Zip Line in the world at 5,330 feet, and
includes a 1,300 vertical drop. The zip line begins at the top of a mountain 1,300
feet above sea level. Accelerating to speeds up to 60 mph the zip line lasts 1.5
minutes before landing on the beach. Family members can wait for you on the
beach and take photos as you make the descent.
