SALZBURG AUSTRIA
by Ritika Nandkeolyar

Visitors in a rush often focus on Mozart and the Sound
of Music and miss many of the other charming sights the lovely city
of
Salzburg has to offer. Don't miss the following Salzburg
attractions and activities.

Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung)
The fortress has overlooked
Salzburg for more than 900
years. Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, the
fortress has served as the temporary residence of
prince archbishops, military barracks and a prison. It
is the largest fully-preserved fortress in central
Europe and attractions include the medieval princes’
apartments and a museum of its history. Visitors can
walk up through the narrow cobbled streets of old
Salzburg to reach the fortress or take a short trip on
the funicular railway from the Festungsgasse.

Old City
Sazlburg’s historic city center was designated a world
heritage site by UNESCO. Bounded on one side by the
Salzach River and on the other side by the Festung and
Mönchsberg hill, the old city features many scenic
buildings from the Middle Ages, Romanesque, Baroque
and Renaissance periods. Many buildings are connected
by passageways featuring courtyards with elaborate
bas-reliefs and statues. Although the old town is
compact enough that you can walk end to end in 20
minutes, many visitors can’t resist a ride in an
old-fashioned Fiaker (horse and carriage). Highlights
include the Getreidegasse, a shopping lane with high
narrow houses and wrought iron guild signs, Mozart’s
Birthplace and Museum, the Residenz and the 15 meter
baroque horse fountain in the Residenzplatz. The
famous Cafe Tomaselli in the old market is a coffee
house in the Viennese style.

Mirabell Palace and Gardens
Located in the newer-part of
Salzburg, the palace was
originally built by the Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for
his mistress and their ten children in 1606. The
palace currently houses the mayor’s office and city
government and is a popular place for marriages. The
gardens were featured in The Sound of Music romptu
concerts.

Hellbrunn Palace
Located at the foot of Hellbrunn Mountain and outside
of
Salzburg proper, this former summer residence of
the Archbishops of
Salzburg Salzburg is well-worth the trek.
Built by Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus in the
early 17th century as an Italianate “villa suburbana,”
the palace is most famous for its beautiful gardens
and trick fountains. Kids of all ages enjoy being
surprised by the Wasserspiele (water games) which
allowed the Archbishop to play practical jokes on his
visitors during court entertainments. Also on the
grounds is the folklore collection of the Carolino
Augusteum Museum.

Untersberg Mountain
Located south of the city, the Untersberg is a good
introduction to some of the scenic beauty in
Salzburgland. There are numerous treks up the peak
that allow visitors to see alpine meadows and distant
mountain panoramas. About an hour and half from the
summit are ice caves. For the less energetic, cable
cars take you to the top for a great view of
Salzburg
and the surrounding valley.

Sound of Music
The movie Sound of Music, made the Von Trapp family
Salzburg’s second most famous residents. There are
many tours that will take you to Sound of
Music-associated sites in
Salzburg and the nearby
countryside. Be prepared for your tour guide or fellow
travelers to burst into song.

Salzburg’s Cathedral (Dom)
Considered the most impressive early Baroque cathedral
north of the Alps, the Dom is a testament to the
historical importance of the city’s Prince
Archbishops. While the first cathedral was built on
this site in 767, the majority of the current building
was rebuilt during early 17th century by the Prince
Archbishops Wolf Dietrich, Markus Sittikus and Paris
Lodron. More recently, the dome and chancel were
rebuilt in 1959 after being hit by bombs during World
War Two. Mozart was baptized at this cathedral.

St.Peter’s Church and monastery
St.Peter’s church was founded in 700, but the current
rococo decoration dates only to the 18th century. The
monastery is the oldest continuously active monastery
in Germanic land. St Peter’s is associated with music
history. In 1769, thirteen-year-old Mozart composed
the "Dominicus Mass" for Abbot Hagenauer and in 1783
personally directed his famous Mass in C-minor. In
1782, Johann Michael Haydn composed the "Rupert Mass"
for St. Peter's.

Festival Buildings/Festival
For five weeks every summer, the
Salzburg Festspiele
(music festival) takes over the old town with hundreds
of operas, classical music concerts and plays. The
festival is considered one of the world’s best venues
and many performances are sold out in advance. The
premiere stages of the festival are the large and
small festival halls which can be toured in the
off-season. The most unusual theater is the
Felsenreitschule (Rocky Riding School), originally
built over 300 years ago for the archbishop’s cavalry.

Beer Garden
Beer gardens are an integral part of
Salzburg life,
much as in neighboring Bavaria. Beer gardens are good
place to sample local beers and food. Located near the
Festung, Stiegl Brauerei features a beer brewing
museum and is the most famous garden. Also popular is
the 3000-seat Müllner Bräu, which is also called
Augustiner Bräu.
