EL REY RUINS
Memories of the Past: The Ruins of Mexico

One of the most breath-taking sites in Cancun is within walking
distance of most of the popular hotels. Juxtaposed amidst Cancun's
bustling hotel zone are the ruins of El Rey, ancient remains of the
Native American civilization that used to be where the hotels now
stand. Because they are so close to the hotels, it is almost
unthinkable to leave Cancun without visiting these ruins.
The most startling thing you will find when you get to this little escape
from modern culture is the literally hundreds of iguanas sunbathing
among the stones. This is their island paradise in the sea of traffic
and tourism that is the Cancun hotel zone. Unfortunately, when the
hotels were built, these lizards lost their natural habitat. The El Rey
ruins became their new home. The park workers feed the iguanas, so
they are quite tame, especially if you have a tortilla in your hand. You
can get a close-up look at the beautiful lizards at the El Rey ruins.
El Rey is extremely small. There are no large pyramids to be found
and explored here, as there are at other ruin sites in Mexico, some of
which are quite near Cancun. However, there are large platforms and
also round columns that archeologists believe once held up large
roofs. From this site, you can look down and see many of the large
modern hotels that make up the Cancun hotel zone.
The ruins are open daily until 5 PM and the park rangers will let you
feed the iguanas and will show you how to do so safely and comically.
Be sure to bring bread or tortillas. The cost to get into the park is $3 in
US dollars, and the bus ride to get there from any of the major hotels
is less than a dollar, making this a very inexpensive adventure.
Because of the hundreds of iguanas, this is an especially fun trip for
families with small children, and it is a great way to wind down a day
as you are heading back to your hotel.
If you want to see more of the Mayan ruins and explore a more
historical site, your best bet is to take a day trip to Chichen Itza. This
however, will be more expensive and you need to schedule a full day
for visiting this location. El Rey is a very basic kind of ruin site, so if you
don't have time to visit larger ruins, this is a good options so that you
can see some of the ancient culture before you leave Cancun.
