CANCUN SHOPPING
Shop-a-holics in Cancun
by Larry Blenn
No matter where you live in the world, one thing remains the
same-people love to shop. And, wherever there are people who love to
shop, there are other people who will find things to sell. Cancun is no
exception. While on your vacation in Cancun, you can visit a number of
malls, market places, and boutiques to find everything and anything
you could ever want.
Cancun has a number of shopping malls available with stores that
are often times the same as in the United States. When shopping
here, be wary of prices and always keep the exchange rate in the back
of your mind-shop owners take advantage of tourists in some places
by spiking prices. Some of the most well known Cancun shopping
malls include Plaza La Isle, Flamingo Plaza, Plaza Caracol,
Forum-by-the-Sea, and Plaza Las Americans.
However, if you are in Cancun, chances are you want a more ethnic
shopping experience as well, since you can shop in a mall when you
are at home anytime. Handcrafts at markets are probably more your
style in this case. One of the largest and most famous places to shop
for a market experience is Market 28, located in downtown Cancun. It
is a very easy destination to find, and close to a number of other
shopping centers. Here, you can explore a market of fun gifts and
souvenirs, such as traditional Mexican clothing and blankets, jewelry,
pottery, and other hand-made items. It is similar to an American flea
market-haggling for a better price is not only acceptable, but is even
expected by vendors. Other such markets include Coral Negro and
Market Ki-Huic.
You can also find American stand-bys in Cancun, such as Wal Mart,
The Home Depot, Costco, and Sam's Club. Mexican businesses like
these are available as well. Shopping here is good in a pinch when
you need an item, but these stores are no different than the stores you
will see at home.
Be sure to exchange your money at a bank when in Cancun, as many
vendors are picky about taking American money and credit cards, and
there are many fees associated with this. When you visit Cancun,
there are rules about how much money you may bring into and take
out of the country, so be sure to check this before you leave. Getting
your things home can be an issue as well-most airlines allow a
certain weight only for your luggage, and going over this can be very
expensive. Consider having larger items shipped to you home and
find out the various rules about this. Some items you cannot ship or
physically take with you from Mexico, so check customs laws before
you make any purchases, but otherwise enjoy your Cancun shopping
experience.
