Food, Wine, Cultural and Family Events Celebrated in the Annual
Program
Autumn Tides, the celebrated series of fall festivals highlighting
the arts, culture, cuisine and heritage of Northwest Florida,
returns to Beaches of South Walton for its 2005 program. An
annual tradition, Autumn Tides illustrates the depth, vibrance and
majesty of these 13 beach communities, proving without a doubt,
that there’s far more to Beaches of South Walton’s spectacular
setting than surf, sun and sand.
Continuing through December, this year’s Autumn Tides program
includes annual favorites as well as new events and activities.
Pleasant 70-degree temperatures and fantastic seasonal rates
offer the perfect opportunity for a romantic getaway or long
weekend the whole family can enjoy.
BEACHES OF SOUTH WALTON FESTIVALS
Food and wine festivals feature Southern delicacies, specialty
wines, fresh seafood and more. In Rosemary Beach, the
Southern Breeze Coastal Wine Tour (October 21-23) blends
premium wines with Gulf Coast food and culture and features the
unique “Walkabout Brunch.” Sandestin hosts Beaujolais
Nouveau (November 17), which embraces an age-old French
tradition during the holidays.
Exhibitions, films and live performances celebrate the area’s
thriving arts culture. A highlight of this year’s Autumn Tides
season, The Chair Affair, fashioned after the Cow Parade in
Chicago, features 50 individually-painted Adirondack chairs in
premier locations throughout the area through September. The
chairs will be auctioned off at the November 5 Chair Affair
celebration party. The Autumn Playwright Festival (October 13-
23) is a two-week event celebrating the works of a famous
playwright, including play productions, panel discussions, staged
readings and ancillary events. This year’s event will focus on the
works of Edward Albee highlighting one of his most important
plays, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf."
Environmental events honor the area’s sugar-white sand, pristine
sand dunes, and scenic nature trails. The fourth annual Back to
Nature Festival (October 21-23) showcases the area’s exquisite
landscape and rich history with two days of activities, including
hiking, biking, kayaking, area tours, nature walks and boat tours.
Screened under the stars in the WaterColor amphitheater,
Telluride's MOUNTAINFILM on Tour (October 28-29) features the
best selections from America's premier festival of adventure,
cultural, and environmental film and video.
Sporting events celebrate healthy, active lifestyles and offer
spectacular Gulf Coast views. In September, the Third Annual
Trek for the Coast (November 19-20) is a half marathon and 5K
race, sponsored by the Clean Beaches Council. Family activities
including the Health and Fitness Fair and a one-mile family fun
run are also included.
Family-friendly events entertain the “kid” in all of us. An Autumn
Tides favorite, Via Colori (October 1-2) is an Italian street painting
festival where visitors and residents create masterpieces out of
colored chalk and cement. More than 100 arts and crafts booths,
butterfly costume parades and more highlight the Flutterby
Children’s Art Festival (October 15-16). South Walton Holiday
Parade and Turn on the Town Celebration (November 26) kicks
off the holiday season in the with an old-fashioned holiday
parade from Seagrove Beach to Seaside, culminating in the
grand tree-lighting ceremony. Families enjoy live music, free hot
cocoa and cookies as the entire downtown Seaside is
illuminated in brilliant white lights.
